ARC MARYLAND NAMES ATTORNEY JAMES LIST “VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR” FOR WORK WITH PEOPLE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
SALISBURY, MD (10/30/13) — The Arc Maryland has named attorney James A. List the organization’s Volunteer of the Year for 2013.
List – founder of The Law Offices of James A. List, LLC, a mid-Atlantic law firm serving business owners and individuals with real estate, estate planning, asset protection, and trust needs – recently completed two terms as President of The Arc Baltimore.
List has served on The Arc Baltimore’s Board of Directors in a number of capacities for almost past eight years and continues to serve as the organization’s Immediate Past President. With The Arc Baltimore, he has spearheaded numerous initiatives on behalf of individuals with developmental disabilities, both locally and nationally. In addition, List’s law firm devotes a substantial part of its practice to work with families which have members with developmental disabilities.
“Jim has contributed abundantly of his time, talent, and resources,” says current Arc Baltimore President Carla Murphy. “As part of our Family Education Series, he has presented on special needs trusts and estate planning. He is a huge advocate for building The Arc’s endowment to ensure the long-term mission, and is always sponsoring Arc events and introducing people to The Arc mission.”
List’s firm recently became “Of Counsel” to the Hunt Valley, MD law firm Hofmeister, Breza & Leavers (HBL). In addition, List, HBL, and a third firm – Community Settlement Group (CSG) -jointly opened an Eastern Shore office in Salisbury in September. Located at 212 West Main Street in the heart of Salisbury’s downtown district, the new office “enables my firm, HBL, and CSG to better serve our clients and referral sources on the Eastern Shore,” says List.
List started his firm in 2008 after serving as a Partner in the wealth management and corporate departments of Miles & Stockbridge P.C. from 2004 to 2007, and in the corporate department of Hodes, Pessin& Katz P.A. from 2001 to 2004. He previously had worked for Maryland National Bank as the portfolio manager for retirement products, after serving as a marketing research analyst, a senior telecommunications analyst, and an information systems analyst.
Beyond List’s volunteer work on behalf of individuals with developmental disabilities, he has served on the board of The Red Devils, which supports breast cancer families, since 2006. List frequently lectures about business continuation planning, special needs trusts, estate planning, and long-term care. The fifteenth anniversary edition of his book, “A Layperson’s Guide to Estate Planning,” will be published next month.
